Ever-blooming flowers for ever-frozen bodies
At the entrance of the room there is a refrigerated box holding digital (and therefore immortal) flowers, in video format. When the box is closed, a single loud noise prompts visitors to open the door and listen to each story individually. Each video tells the story of one person and their relationship with one flower. ALCOR, a cryogenic lab in Silicon Valley, develops technologies capable of freezing and reanimating bodies and cells, ultimately transcending mortality. People can go and visit their families and also leave flowers for them. The work is inspired by this and reflects on the ways memory is shaped by political, bureaucratic, and societal forces, but also on the impact of digital archives on the concept of immortality.
